Carpenter Ant Identification

Notice the evenly rounded thorax in the center of the ant.  The thorax is the area between the  head and the abdomen.  The ant has a circle of hairs around the vent.  You may not be able to see thiswithout a lens. There is also a small apendage between the thorax and the abdomen.  They can be any length between 5/16″ and 1/2 ” long.  They are rather large for an ant. These should be sufficient for you to identify a carpenter ant. Carpenter Ant OPPT Time

It is time to do the first treatment (OPPT) on your structure. It is warm enough for the ants to be active. Carpenter ants eat liquid food. They like plant nectars so are getting the nectars from flowers of blooming trees and plants.  They may be eating syrups or “Pop can dregs” in your home.  They also like liquids that maybe in your garbage. In about 2 weeks it will be time for the carpenter ant reproductives to fly.   The males come out first to determine if it is time to fly.  When they determine that the time is right they release a pheromone that tells the female reproductives that it is time to fly out and mate.  This is called the nuptual flight.  Read the rest of this entry »

Carpenter ants are starting to show themselves inside of the house.  They will go to the shower, sink or bathtub and go down into the drain to get water.  They take this water back to the nest inside of your structure.  This nest is considered a satelite nest.  The Queen’s nest is outside.  This shows there is definitely an infestation within the home.  Do not panic if it is before March 15 as they are just getting water.
