Sprayer Problems

Plant care is very important to many people. Olympic Spray Service has done Dormant Spraying for Fruit trees and Ornimentals for many years. The main problem is finding the correct weather when to do it. This year when the weather was right I did not have any equipment ready. One of my employees had used one of my sprayers to spray Tim-bor and then shut it down and left it without rinsing the equipment. He had sprayed a supersaturated solution of Tim-bor Salt and it plugged the hose, the reel, the regulators and all parts of the sprayer. I was able to get the Tim-bor out of everything but the hose. I had to use a drill to remove much of the Tim-bor. I need to use hot water in which to immerse the hose and then power the Tim-bor out of the hose. I hope this will work or it is goodbye hose. I went to use another sprayer but the bottom of the cone was leaking. The gasket had stretched so much that it squirted out from the part it was supposed to seal. I did get an “O” ring but that did not work. Now I need to order a new gasket from the supplier. That puts that sprayer out of commision for a while. Well, I set up a new sprayer tank for spraying and now the good weather is gone.  Luckily that Technician no longer works for me.

Dampwood Termites

Dampwood Termites tend to fly during the driest time of the year. This is usually from late July to August and even into September. Dampwood Termites need Damp Wood. As long as your structure has no Roof leaks, Plumbing leaks or Earthwood contacts then there is no need to worry about the dampwood termite.  The female is not going to be able to succeed at rearing out eggs or instars without moisture.

When the reproductives fly they can get in a tiny vent hole that may be in a window frame or Roof or skylight. Pick them up with a vacuum cleaner.  There is no need to use any toxic materials on Dampwood Termites.  Remove the damp wood and the source of moisture  from your structure.

Sometimes wood may be in contact with concrete.  This may make the wood wet enough for dampwood termites to survive.   Treat the wood by pouring or spraying Tim-bor into any crevice that may have dampwood termite reproductives escaping.  The Tim-bor will pickle the wood so that termites will not be able to survive.

Icynene is an Air Barrier for Sure

Icynene is an air barrier.  That means that water that is disolved in the air cannot get into the insulation or the wall void.  The water cannot reach the dew point where it would turn into liquid water.  The liquid water could raise the moisture content of the wood until fungus rot could survive.  Water that is disolved in the air (as a vapor) can move through fiberglas, celulose or any other fiber insulation and cause problems with fungus rot.  Prevent fungus rot, call us at 457-4341, 379-3862 or 1-800-828-5508.

Deer Mice Can Carry Hanta Virus

The White Footed Deer Mouse can carry the Hanta virus. The Hanta virus is a real problem.  If you get it you are probably going to die. This is particularly a problem when it is dry as particals can be stirred up and you can inhale the virus. Filters that cover your nose and mouth would be appropriate to keep you from breathing the dust.  Installation of the HWC can often be done by Olympic Spray Service.  Call us at 457-4341, 379-3862 or 1-800-828-5508.

Carpenter Ants About to Fly

The phone will soon be ringing off of the hook for carpenter ant calls. First is when the sun comes out and the male carpenter ants come out and fly around.  The male ants are trying to determine if it is time to start the nuptual flight.  Often the sun will go away and the males will go back into their nests.  If theydetermine that it is time to go out for their nuptual flight they will release a pheromone that signals the females that it is time to fly.  The females will come out and they will “tie up” end to end with the males.  They will fly around like dragon flies connected together.  You may or may not be able to see them in flight, if you do see them give us a call, we apprecialte help from our customers.  Call 457-4341, 379-3862 or 1-800-828-5508.
