If you are seeing large ants crawling around your house, they are probably carpenter ants. In January or February the ants are still in diapause (a state of dormancy). While the ants are in diapause they do not eat food. They are also not eating or making tunnels in your structure.

Carpenter Ants on a Deck
It is time to do the first treatment (OPPT) on your structure. It is warm enough for the ants to be active. Carpenter ants eat liquid food. They like plant nectars so are getting the nectars from flowers of blooming trees and plants. They may be eating syrups or “Pop can dregs” in your home. Carpenter ants
In about 2 weeks it will be time for the carpenter ant reproductives to fly. The males come out first to determine if it is time to fly. When they determine that the time is right they release a pheromone that tells the female reproductives that it is time to fly out and mate. This is called the nuptual flight.
