During the Winter carpenter ants are  in a state of diapause.  Diapause is a state of “walking dormancy”.  The carpenter ants are not feeding.  If your house is very dry you may find them coming to a source of water  they will take back to the nest to share. Carpenter Ant OPPT Time

It is time to do the first treatment (OPPT) on your structure. It is warm enough for the ants to be active. Carpenter ants eat liquid food. They like plant nectars so are getting the nectars from flowers of blooming trees and plants.  They may be eating syrups or “Pop can dregs” in your home.  They also like liquids that maybe in your garbage. Carpenter ants are starting to show themselves inside of the house.  They will go to the shower, sink or bathtub and go down into the drain to get water.  They take this water back to the nest inside of your structure.  This nest is considered a satelite nest.  The Queen’s nest is outside.  This shows there is definitely an infestation within the home.  Do not panic if it is before March 15 as they are just getting water.
