Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants are no longer in their dormant period. You maybe seeing the winged reproductives flying about your home. If this happens, you definitely have an infestation. Some homes with a Southern exposure and windows will have these reporductive males coming out to see if it is Spring and time to fly. If they determine that it is time to fly, they will give off a pheromone that tells the female reproductive to come out. They will try to get out. At this point this is all they are trying to do. Get out of the structure. They have their nuptual flight and then the males die. The queen reproductive then goes in search of a wet place to lay her eggs. The nest must be near 100% humidity or the eggs will dry out. This is usually a piece of wood that is in contact with the soil. Often it is at the bottom of a Cedar Tree. After a couple of years the worker ants will carry larvae into a structure and cause an infestation.
