Ticks are not insects. They belong to the order of arthropods known as Acarina. This is the
same as spiders, mites and scorpions. The adults have 8 legs. Ticks are blood suckers. They rarely exceed 3/4 of an inch long when fully engorged with blood. The tiny six legged tick larvae feeds on the white footed deer mouse and picks up the spirochete that causes Lyme disease. The rapid spread of Lyme disease throughout the United States maybe because the larval and nymhal stages may catch a ride on birds.
